Why Autumn is My Favourite Season for Floral Inspiration

There is something about autumn that settles into my bones and makes me feel truly alive. It arrives quietly at first — a shift in the air, a crispness on morning dog walks, the faint mist curling over the fields — and then suddenly, the whole countryside is glowing with change.

I love how the leaves change, tumbling through the air in a thousand shades of russet, amber, and burnished gold. The light softens, taking on that honey-warm glow that turns even the simplest hedgerow into a treasure trough of pickings.  Some mornings, fog hangs low over the fields and everything feels suspended, hushed, and dreamlike. Those are the moments I breathe deepest.

Finding Floral Inspiration in Autumn Walks

Autumn wedding flowers are often inspired by the countryside itself. On my daily dog walks through the Herefordshire fields, I see hedgerows heavy with burnished bracken, crisp leaves underfoot, and grasses catching the golden light. You will find myself and Jen snipping away and filling the boot of my van. As a rural florist, I love pulling colour inspiration directly from nature — the deep pink of  spindle berries, the soft taupe of mist, the rich ochre of fallen leaves. They’re the perfect starting point for seasonal floral arrangements that feel authentic and deeply connected to the land

Cosy Rituals: Candles, Coffee, Coats and Boots

For me, autumn is also about the rituals of comfort. Lighting candles as the afternoons grow darker, cradling a warm coffee between my hands, pulling on coats and boots before heading out into the fields. These small moments of warmth and coziness are as much a part of autumn as the leaves and the golden sunlight.

That sense of comfort translates into my floral designs too. Autumn arrangements often carry a rustic, welcoming feel — full of rich textures and glowing colours that mirror the season’s atmosphere.

Bringing Autumn Colours into Floral Design

When couples come to me looking for seasonal British flowers for their wedding, I often suggest autumn as one of the most magical times of year. The colour palette is endless:

• Rust and terracotta for earthy warmth
• Darker pinks and chocolate for romance
• Sand and blush for softness
• Peach and buttermilk for light

By using flowers that are naturally in season — dahlias, chrysanthemums, phlox, cosmos, the late summer roses, bracken, poppy and love in the mist seed heads, grasses galore — we create arrangements that not only look stunning but also feel timeless and true to the countryside around us.
